The Chicago Zoological Society’s (CZS) Women's Board and Board of Trustees will host its 38th annual black-tie gala on Saturday, April 27, at Brookfield Zoo. The organization’s largest fundraiser of the year typically attracts more than 700 corporate, civic, and philanthropic leaders from throughout the Chicagoland area. Co-chairs of the event are Barbara J. Bradford, a resident of North Barrington and a member of the Chicago Zoological Society’s Board of Trustees, and Romana E. Malinowski, a resident of Hinsdale and member of the Women’s Board.

This year’s theme “Roaring Whirl 2019” celebrates the 100th anniversary of the land donation to the Forest Preserves of Cook County for the express purpose of creating a modern zoo. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour featuring up-close experiences and photo opportunities with many of the zoo’s animal ambassadors. Calihan Catering is serving the three-course delectable dinner in the Grand Tent fabulously decorated in a 1920s theme by The Flower Firm. Dancing to the music of Maggie Speaks, one of Chicago’s most popular bands follows dinner.

The evening also features a paddle raise, raffle, and live auction featuring several incredible items. Included is an 18K gold Akoya pearl and diamond necklace provided by A. Marek Fine Jewelry, naming a southern hairy-nosed wombat baby; attending a clouded leopard physical examination at Brookfield Zoo’s Animal Hospital; 50 bottles of wine with 92 points or higher rating from Wine Spectator; and a long weekend stay at Quail Lodge in Carmel, California, including American Airlines miles and two rounds of golf.

Keeping with the evening’s 1920s theme, the Sultry Jazz Quartet performs in the “speakeasy” bar that opens following dessert. Guests can try their luck at eight casino gaming tables, sample a variety of whiskies, visit the cigar tent, and enjoy after-party snacks and Grasshopper cocktails. There is also the opportunity to take photos standing next to a 1927 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I.

Proceeds from the Whirl support the animals at Brookfield Zoo, as well as the Society’s conservation, education, and research programs. Tickets are $700 per person; tables of 10 also are available.
