The National Medal, which is awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the United States’ highest honor for museum and libraries that have demonstrated extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service. For 25 years, the award has celebrated institutions that are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

Brookfield Zoo, which is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society, is being recognized for its Conservation Leadership Academy, a progressive series of community-based science and nature programs for under-resourced children, youth, and families. The program is conducted in partnership with public libraries and nonprofit community organizations in Chicago, Cicero, and Melrose Park. The four current Academy programs include Nature Play Zoo Adventure Passport, Zoo Adventure Passport, Zoo Explorers Club, and King Conservation Science Scholars. Several thousand participants take part in the four programs.

“The Chicago Zoological Society is honored to be nominated for the 2019 IMLS National Medal for Museum Services. It is a Society strategic priority to engage every child with wildlife and nature, particularly children from under-resourced neighborhoods,” said Stuart Strahl, president and CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society. “Through our Conservation Leadership Academy programs, we serve more than 4,000 children from preschool through high school every year, connecting them with nature and encouraging STEM learning at all levels.”
