The summer season is in full bloom on the Magnificent Mile!

All along the Magnificent Mile, property owners and landscape contractors have worked tirelessly to prepare the landscape and hardscape for another busy summer season. Take a walk on the Avenue and you’ll see a mix of classic and unique elements in the landscape, including fountains, doors, and other forms of whimsical ornamentation. As local and out-of-town visitors frequent the Magnificent Mile throughout the season, the Avenue continues to surpass expectations as a stunning destination. Furthermore, as Chicago welcomes record-breaking numbers of tourists, the Magnificent Mile invites all visitors seeking a one-of-a-kind experience to stop and admire its distinctive beauty.

The Summer 2019 Magnificent Mile Beautification Walk was held on Wednesday, July 10th by the Planning and Advocacy Division’s Public Way Committee. Each season, members of the Committee walk along North Michigan Avenue’s public way with clipboards in hand, taking the time to carefully assess the overall conditions in front of each property between the Chicago River and Oak Street. The perennials and annuals (particularly the coleus plants!) looked fresh and vibrant. The thoughtfulness and diligence that go into preparing all the Avenue’s plantings – and executing them flawlessly season after season – is truly remarkable.

The Public Way Committee warmly thanks all those tasked with keeping the Avenue beautiful – property owners and managers, landscape architects, and various contractors – and tending to the public way conditions. All these parties play an integral role in shaping the experience that we all know and love about the Avenue.

We would also like to express our appreciation and thanks to the Woman’s Athletic Club of Chicago at 626 N. Michigan Avenue for once again hosting a breakfast and committee review meeting after the walk. In the ever-unpredictable, at-times harsh Chicago weather, we always look forward to relaxing and enjoying the hospitality of the Club after our walks. Thanks to the Club for once again hosting the Committee!

The Public Way Committee is grateful for another year of beautiful conditions along the Magnificent Mile. The annual awards for the 2018-2019 series will be presented to top-scoring properties this fall.
