Dear Members,

Anticipation is building for a landmark summer! This year marks the 20th anniversary of the iconic “Cows on Parade,” and on July 1 the Public Arts Committee of The Magnificent Mile Association will assemble a herd of the original sculptures in Jane Byrne Park – alongside the historic Water Tower – for a month-long installation. A big thank you to Grace Rappe and Walt Chadick, Public Art Committee Co-Chairs, and of course to Peter Hanig for the inspiration.

Later this summer, after the “Cows Come Home,” we join the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for the 150th anniversary celebration of the historic Water Tower. The Association will line the street with 25+ custom-designed replicas of the Water Tower from late August through early October. Be on the lookout for these sculptures; and reach out to Association staff if you would like to host an art piece.

Ahead of these milestones, the Association celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the enhanced Sister Streets Partnership with Midosuji, the major boulevard in Osaka, Japan that shares many qualities with our district. Stop by to see the official plaque in front of the Tiffany’s store.

All this would not be possible without the hard work of the staff, and to that end our Leadership Committee is committed to onboarding a new President/CEO this summer. We are currently in the final stages of the interview process, and we look forward to renewed leadership to round out a successful year.

In the meantime, we encourage you to be vigilant in your daily plan for securing your premises, especially during the busiest months of the year. While there have only been a couple of incidents of youth gatherings in the past month. The Magnificent Mile Association communicates regularly with the Chicago Police Department and continues to provide security alerts to member businesses. Be sure to reach out to Phil Levin (plevin@themagnificentmile.com) to sign up for security alerts.
