Archive: Greetings From The Chairman

Mr. John McCarthy
President and CEO of Continental Air Transport Co. Inc.
Chairman of the Board, February 2015-February 2017

FEBRUARY 2017

Dear Members,

It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the past two years. There has been no shortage of success, owing to consistent collaboration across industries and an unwavering commitment to community values.

Together, we built on our holiday tradition and utilized IEG as a leader in sponsorship to secure record partnerships for the 25th Annual BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. One year prior, the Lights Festival was awarded Best Event in the state at the 2016 Illinois Governors Conference on Travel and Tourism. Each November, we come together as hundreds of volunteers to bring smiles to guests and build business in the district throughout the holiday season.

We build our businesses together year-round at Member Connections and events. I have joined you 1,000 feet up at 360 CHICAGO Observatory; at Riva Café on Navy Pier; and out on the lake aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises—just to name a few. Throughout the past two years, it has been a great pleasure for me to work with the staff and volunteers of the Association in making The Magnificent Mile experience something unique. I thank you for your commitment and support. It is what makes the Association so very successful.

I invite you once again to join me at our Annual Meeting on Monday, February 13 at the Westin Michigan Avenue. We will review our work together in 2016, honor individual members and businesses who have contributed greatly to our community, and install a new Chairman of the Board to lead the Association forward. A reception will follow with delicious bites and cocktails from member restaurants. I cannot wait to see you all there!

Sincerely,

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board Of Directors

JANUARY 2017

Dear Members,

I hope all is well so far in 2017. I am excited to see the full membership together again at The Magnificent Mile Association Annual Meeting on Monday, February 13 at 5:30 PM at the Westin Michigan Avenue. The Annual Meeting will include the election and installation of Officers and Directors, a presentation highlighting the year’s achievements, The Magnificent Mile Association Member Recognition Awards—with delicious food and cocktails to follow.

Start planning now for a year full of opportunities to network with fellow members at monthly connections; collaborate on volunteer committees; and regularly promote your business via the Association’s marketing efforts. Be sure to reach out to the staff if you are not receiving regular e-communications and event invitations. You will not want to miss the opportunity to celebrate in style at the Annual Gala on Friday, May 12 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

The Association staff has also committed to bi-monthly breakfasts in which to orient new members or contacts at existing member businesses who wish to learn more. These meetings will be held at the Association office at 625 N. Michigan Avenue with the first one taking place on Thursday, February 2, 2017.

First and foremost, look out for information on the new Member Portal for TheMagnificentMile.com, which will allow you to update expanded information on your business for the consumer website. You will also be able to submit event, offers and other promotions for posting to the newly re-designed Events Calendar and “What’s Hot” blog. Explore opportunities to maximize your presence on TheMagnificentMile.com, including digital advertising and sponsored content, which at present yields ten times the national average click-through rate.

Chicago broke tourism records yet again in 2016, and we all play a crucial role in developing this success towards a goal of 55 million visitors by 2020. In short: get engaged today and help us help you!

Happy New Year!

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

OCTOBER 2016

Dear Members,

Last month, we launched a re-designed TheMagnificentMile.com. Shortly after, we re-branded our e-Newsletter program for maximum engagement. Click-through rates have more than tripled, website conversions are on the rise and consumers are signing up to learn more. Best of all, there is no cost to join in the Association’s renewed marketing efforts. Now is the time to maximize your online presence during the busy holiday season.

The 25th Annual BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is six weeks away and web traffic will peak as visitors plan their trip. Take advantage to promote a special offer or event in your business for free during Lights Festival weekend or throughout the holiday season. All member promotions are posted to TheMagnificentMile.com and messaged via social media through the end of the year. It’s easy to submit an offer online.

Our goal is to put Association members on the map year-round and drive increased leads to your business and your website. Please be on the lookout this month for an email with instructions on how to submit updated information, images and more to a full-page business listing on TheMagnificentMile.com.

Sincerely,

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

SEPTEMBER 2016

Dear Members,

Last week, we officially re-launched TheMagnificentMile.com at the Fall Member Breakfast at the Westin Chicago River North. I am excited to introduce you to your new sales tool, which provides upgraded and continued benefits year-round. Our goal is to put our members on the map and drive increased leads to your business and your website.

To that end, all members listed on the website can now feature detailed information and multiple images on a full-page business listing. These listings are integrated with digital mapping, and the full site is mobile optimized to ensure that visitors find what they are looking for quickly and efficiently—in real time.

The new website also has a greater focus on current events and promotions, which are featured directly on the homepage as part of the “What’s Hot” blog and Events Calendar. Please be on the lookout for an email in the coming weeks with instructions on how to submit updated information, images and more to promote your business.

It now easier than ever before to explore the district, and to that end we were pleased to present Beautification Awards at the Fall Member Breakfast. The effort of individual properties to maintain and beautify their gardens each season is a crucial part of The Magnificent Mile experience. Congratulations to 676 N. Michigan Avenue – CBRE Asset Services/Omni Chicago Hotel on winning the 2016 Chairmen’s Award, as well as the recipients of the Honor Awards, Merit Awards and Neighborhood Recognition Awards.

Sincerely,

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

AUGUST 2016

Dear Members,

Member businesses frequently report that TheMagnificentMile.com is their top referring site for outbound clicks. 240 member companies will receive more than 1000 web referrals from us this year. To ensure the continued success of our digital marketing, we are thrilled to announce a full re-design of TheMagnificentMile.com at our Fall Membership Breakfast at The Westin Chicago River North on September 13.

Our mission is to put members on the map. The mobile experience is more important than ever, as users interact with the website in real time while exploring the district, and to that end we will vastly improve search ability and integrate digital maps alongside member listings. As the gateway to The Magnificent Mile experience, we will provide greater opportunity to feature member businesses front and center on the homepage as part of our “What’s Hot” blog.

TheMagnificentMile.com is only one of several benefits that we package with the annual membership. Take advantage of Association events to market your business in-person and connect with other members this summer.

Registration is open for Run Mag Mile, the only race to feature The Magnificent Mile as the course centerpiece on Saturday, September 10. This is a great opportunity for team-building and corporate wellness initiatives, as well as marketing your business. Be sure to contact Ashley Gordon to learn more about The Magnificent Mile Pop-up Marketplace at Start/Finish!

Sincerely,

JULY 2016

Dear Members,

Summertime in Chicago provides us the best opportunity to showcase The Magnificent Mile experience. Plans are well underway for our third annual signature event, Run Mag Mile, which is the only race in Chicago to feature the district as the course centerpiece. I encourage member businesses to partner with the Association to build business around the event on Saturday, September 10. Join 5,000 runners and register now with friends and co-workers for an end-of-summer Corporate Wellness and team-building activity.

Start training to run with outdoor fitness classes along the Riverwalk or sunrise yoga in the park. Indulge in rooftop terraces and outdoor patios to enjoy the district after work, or take a break out of your day to enjoy live music at the John Hancock Center Plaza. Visit Navy Pier during their Centennial Celebration, and look out for Tall Ships Chicago returning to the pier later this month.

There is so much to explore, and we continue to promote special events and offerings on our “What’s Hot” blog on TheMagnificentMile.com. Look out for exciting updates to our website later this summer!

We invite you to join us for the Annual Boat Cruise on Tuesday, August 9. Enjoy an evening cruise aboard Chicago’s Classic Lady, networking with fellow members in view of the iconic Chicago skyline. Look out as well for information about upcoming Membership Connections to round out our summer schedule of member events.

Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated committee of volunteers who helped plan the Annual Golf Outing on Monday, June 20. The event was a huge success! We rely heavily on the support of our member volunteers, and I encourage you to reach out and see how you can get more involved with the Association.

Sincerely,

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

JUNE 2016

Dear Members,

The Magnificent Mile Association Annual Gala, “Mad About The Mile,” was a big success! Attendance was up from last year: close to 900 guests attended our largest fundraiser of the year on Friday, May 13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The evening began with gaming from Rivers Casino, followed by fine cuisine prepared by the hotel and a variety of desserts from Association member restaurants. The dance floor was packed all night as guests enjoyed live music from Dr. Bombay.

I would like to thank our hardworking Gala committee and volunteers, and recognize the beautiful décor by Tamar Productions, Inc. Thank you as well to those who sponsored the Ad Book; and of course to all those who attended and dressed in their finest. Be sure to check out photos!

The gala is only the start of our summer event schedule. Sign up now for the Annual Golf Outing on June 20; and look out for our Summer Boat Cruise on August 9. Monthly Member Connections also provide a great opportunity to network at local businesses.

Registration is now open for RUN MAG MILE on Saturday, September 10, the only race in Chicago to feature The Magnificent Mile as the course centerpiece. Association members have the opportunity for off-site activations at the start/finish line as part of a uniquely “Mag Mile” event experience. Be sure to reach out to Ashley Gordon (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) to take advantage of this opportunity.

Let’s come together as a community to make this summer a big success on The Magnificent Mile!

Sincerely,

John McCarthy

MAY 2016

Dear Members,

On Friday May 13, we celebrate our 104th year as the premier association serving our business community during The Magnificent Mile Association 2016 Annual Gala. This celebration provides crucial financial support to the continued success and daily operations of our association. “Mad about the Mile” promises to be an exciting evening for Association members and friends from The Magnificent Mile neighborhood! If you haven’t already, be sure to reserve your table for our largest fundraiser of the year.

I would like to thank our sponsors for their commitment and contributions to this gala and a thank you is also in order for Patrick Donelly and the team at the Hyatt Regency Chicago for hosting us again, and for the wonderful dinner that we will enjoy together.

In addition, thank you to The Magnificent Mile Association supporters who have purchased tables, tickets, and ads. Please take a moment to page through this wonderful Ad Book during the event, filled with good wishes extended by so many.  The ad book will also be available online year-round.

Another special thank you goes to our generous donors to the Gala Roulette & Silent Auction.  All money received for the Gala Roulette & Silent Auction goes directly to charities within The Magnificent Mile district, and is distributed at the Fall Membership Luncheon. It’s a great way to give back to the community!

We acknowledge the ongoing leadership of Lee Golub and Ruben Ruban, co-Chairs of this spectacular event and to the Gala Committee members. Under Lee & Ruben’s leadership, we will welcome a full room of avid supporters enjoying a magical evening produced by Tamar Productions, with the energetic sounds of Dr. Bombay. We are grateful for all of your support.

Finally, I’d like to thank all of our civic partners, special guests, and most of all the volunteers who make our organization such a tremendous success.  It has been said, “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” It is because of our volunteers that The Magnificent Mile Association is able to provide a world-class experience to residents, tenants, and visitors from around the world.

My sincerest thank you!

John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board

APRIL 2016

Dear Members,

Invitations are on their way for our premier fundraiser of the year. Prepare to be “Mad About the Mile” and join us for our Annual Gala on Friday, May 13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. We are excited to welcome back Dr. Bombay for live music and dancing. The night begins with a variety of gaming courtesy of Rivers Casino in addition to a great silent auction.

Promote your business during the gala and secure your spot for the rest of the year. Space is still available for the Gala Ad Book, placed at every table setting and featured on our website from June – December.

Support the Association as an active member, and maximize your potential for personal and professional growth year-round. The gala is one of several dynamic opportunities to connect with fellow members and business leaders in the community.

This week, we welcome singer songwriter Cady Groves for a live performance at our Spring Luncheon, hosted by Sheraton Grand Chicago. Marilynn Gardner, CEO of Navy Pier—Illinois’ most popular attraction—will address the group. Monthly networking opportunities at Membership Connections continue to impress at new venues, including Marshall Pierce & Company, The Terrace at The Gwen, 900 North Michigan Shops and The Signature Room at the 95th.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

MARCH 2016

Dear Members,

Have you reviewed the 2015 Annual Report? In addition to providing important updates from each department of the Association, the report reflects the hard work of volunteers. Active and involved members are crucial to our success.

Last year, the Association welcomed 71 new members and achieved an 88% retention rate. This would not be possible without the hard work of our Membership Committee. Volunteers help seek out and welcome prospective members at monthly Membership Connections; and check in with new and existing members to ensure the best experience possible.

Our Gala Committee is busy planning our premier event of the year. Join more than 900 members and community partners to celebrate “Mad about the Mile” on Friday, May 13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Over half of the tables have already been committed, thanks in part to the dedicated outreach of volunteer committee leaders. Be sure to reserve your table!

Look out as well for more information about our Gala Ad Book, placed at every table setting and featured on our website from June – December.

Still, it is crucial that we hear from you, as well. Reach out with any to make sure you are maximizing your membership. Learn about opportunities to get involved in 2016. As always, contact me directly with any questions.

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board of Directors

FEBRUARY 2016

Dear Magnificent Mile Association Members,

We started 2015 with the excitement of new leadership within our Board of Directors and Executive Committee, as well as our executive staff. During our Annual Leadership Summit, this team examined how we manage and market The Magnificent Mile experience for visitors, residents and tenants.

As the year developed, we welcomed new members giving the Association a 4% increase in member revenue.  Our members leveraged our robust marketing support utilizing all forms of social media to grow their business. Hotel occupancy and visitors to the city reached record levels, as reported by Choose Chicago. Summer attractions indicated a strong season. Dining and nightlife members also reported increases.

While all of this was good news, challenging headwinds developed. The Association experienced changes in event sponsor revenue, especially losing over $250,000 in matching state tourism grants and other support, which was unable to be completely replaced by new sponsors. The Association is reporting an operating loss for the year.

Fortunately, the Association did have sufficient equity to weather this operating challenge and did not reduce service to, and on behalf of, members. The leadership of the Association felt it was important to continue efforts to protect and promote The Magnificent Mile experience.

The BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival was a very successful outcome of that commitment. We produced an outstanding show which garnered record television audiences locally and nationally. Social media impact was also significantly improved over previous years. Fifteen of our 28 sponsors were new to the event and we look forward to welcoming them back as we celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2016.

Networking to build business continues to be a primary focus of many members, utilizing member connections, the Annual Meeting, Golf Outing, Summer Cruise, and of course the Annual Gala. A new feature was the December Holiday Celebration, recasting one of our Membership Luncheons. All of these events were well attended by diverse groups of members.

The Magnificent Mile is world renowned because of the contributions of our Planning and Advocacy committees. From the award winning landscaping to the meticulous planning details coordinated with elected officials and civic partners, we continue to be One of the Great Avenues of the World®.

We so appreciate the many members and leaders who stepped forward with creativity, commitment, and contributions in order to serve our members in the best way possible. In the coming year we have committed to a marketing initiative that will generate new sponsorship and funding opportunities.  We look forward to a fiscally stronger year and one that continues to strengthen the Association’s ability to enhance The Magnificent Mile.

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board

JANUARY 2016

Dear Members,

Happy New Year! There is already a lot to look forward to, including our first Membership Connection of the year—and our first-ever for the month of January—at The Windsor on Wednesday, January 20.

The Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 9 at the Westin Michigan Avenue is an excellent opportunity to reflect on 2015, including the presentation of several member awards. If you have not done so already, please take the time to submit your nomination and recognize your peers’ accomplishments.

As you make your resolutions and set professional goals in 2016, I encourage you to maximize your Association membership. This involves a personal investment of time and enthusiasm, and there are many ways to get involved.

Volunteer with us this year. Each event or initiative is directed by a committee:the Annual Gala, “Mad about the Mile”; the 25th anniversary celebration of the BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival; planning, advocacy and safety initiatives; and member recruitment and retention, among others.

The staff is seasoned, determined and open-minded. They are ready to establish and exceed our goals for this year. They will support you as we work together on a regular basis to further our collective success. Should you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Best wishes,
John McCarthy

DECEMBER 2015

Dear Members,

In the face of a winter storm, we welcomed the holiday season at The BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival on Saturday, November 21. Crowds remained strong along a parade route unseasonably dusted with snow, while our determined volunteers weathered the elements and guaranteed a successful event for all. I would like to thank all those who came out to support our annual tradition.

In calculating the results, we are pleased to report an ever-growing community surrounding this event—along the parade route and beyond. 15 new sponsors, include national partners, added great programming to the event.Viewers who tuned in at home yielded increased ratings for the ABC 7 Chicago television broadcast, with record syndication to 94% of the nation reported for the month of December. Social media metrics were way up on all platforms, while page view on TheMagnificentMile.com remained well above one million.

By launching a Facebook event for the Lights Festival, we had 453,000 fans view the page for information, with a total reach of 4.2 million An engaged, online community recommended hotel stays, lent advice, shared personal stories and showcased photos of their time at the Lights Festival. As we prepare for our 25th anniversary celebration in 2016, it is clear that new and evolving media strategies are critical to our success as an Association.

Meanwhile, we continue to develop our member events and provide unique networking opportunities within our district. The first-ever Member Holiday Party on Thursday, December 4 was another great way to kick off the season at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. I would like to thank the dedicated committee of volunteers who gave their time and creative energy for a festive way to bring members together at year’s end.

During the holiday season, as throughout the year, the association staff and volunteers work hard to ensure a wonderful experience for all who visit the Magnificent Mile.  Be sure to stop and enjoy all the district has to offer, including special promotions and holiday events.

Heading into 2016, I encourage you to review your member benefits and reach out to the Association staff to fully understand the range of opportunities available through your membership. We are in an exciting planning phase, and I look forward to updating you in the new year.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,
John McCarthy

JULY 2015

Dear Members,

As we look forward to another busy summer season on The Magnificent Mile, the Association’s Marketing Department recently presented a high-level web analysis for TheMagnificentMile.com, our consumer website, for the past year (June 2014 – June 2015). We were excited to welcome more than 1 million unique visitors from 199 countries, for a total of 1.4 million sessions on the website. We now boast a digital presence literally around the world!

Our key metric is a high degree of user engagement on the website, which is well above average. An exceptionally low bounce rate of fewer than 40% indicates that users are visiting TheMagnificentMile.com with clear intent. They engage thoughtfully and purposefully with the site as they plan their trip.

Perhaps most important in assessing the user experience on our website was a majority of mobile users on TheMagnificentMile.com for the first time in the website’s history. TheMagnificentMile.com is currently optimized for mobile users, but we want to make the mobile site as engaging as possible. This will be a major priority as we re-design the consumer website in 2016.

We continue to offer skyscraper banner advertisements to members for maximum exposure, while our main goal is to ensure a strong digital presence forour members across the site. As we begin to plan for the next stage of web and mobile development, we want to hear from you: Are you aware of the digital marketing benefits of your membership? What changes would you like to see made to our websites: TheMagnificentMile.com (B2C) and TheMagnificentMileAssociation.com (B2B)?

As always, please feel free to reach out directly to me via email.

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board

JUNE 2015

Dear Members,

Our signature event for The Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival™ this summer is the second annual Magnificent Mile Chicago Women’s Half Marathon & 5K on Sunday, September 6. Indeed, this month’s call to action is to “Run Together” and we are excited to gather registered members for a dedicated Association team! Look out for details regarding summer training opportunities and special experiences during the race.

Last month, we kicked off our summer event season with The Magnificent Mile Association Annual Gala, Moonlight Masquerade, on Friday, May 15. If you attended the event, we welcome your feedback via a brief survey.

Even if you were not able to attend, I would love to hear from you! Which is your favorite Association event during the year? What type of events do you value most to connect with other members of the community? What makes an event memorable to you? Please feel free to contact me directly via email; and thank you in advance for your valued input!

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board

MAY 2015

Dear Members,

Last month, I discussed the strength of digital marketing and messaging your business to consumers around the world via The Magnificent Mile® brand. At our annual Leadership Summit on April 25th the board discussed how The Magnificent Mile is more than a destination: it is an experience.  The question we focused on was how the Association can best manage, market and monetize that experience.

The Board of Directors discussedlocal issues from way finding signage to traffic flow that affect the iconic appearance and navigability of our district. They identified a great deal of potential in the digital sector, including the design of TheMagnificentMile.com and the development of The Magnificent Mile app.

Now I would like to hear from you. What issues persist as we enhance our position asa global destination—and which of these directly impact your business? What ideas are on the horizon and how can we as an Association further your goals? I encourage you to consider how you engage your membership currently, and to this end I welcome your direct feedback.

Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Chairman of the Board

Amidst all the excitement, members of the Association remain central to commerce and tourism in the district and the leadership welcomes your feedback.Which upcoming events or initiatives have you factored into your marketing strategy for the spring and summer? How can we help you to maximize your membership? Please feel free to reach out directly via email.

Sincerely,
